We have a saying here in Deer Island. "Only In Deer Island"! do some things happen! When a person greeted Vern, it was "How are ya? His response would be "Retired, single and loving it." Of course we'd tease him about having a girlfriend. One thing about Vern was you always knew where you stood with him. He come in the store and he'd tell me about how they did it at his store! After this tragic turn in his life, I've thought about Vern alot, and naturally who would do such a act. I used to think he was a little reclusive. But let me say I can not believe how many friends he had. Everyone knew him. He'd go down to the Beaver Homes Grange to the potlucks or the Harvest Dinners. They almost had him talked into becoming a member. Don't kid yourself he will be missed..everytime I see a motorcycle I think of Vern. I remember one time he was the driver of the motor home for an outing to Goble Tavern. He drank root beer and we all bought him dinner,we tried to get him to dance, I don't believe that happened,he had a fun night! The next day he came to a 50th party we had planned and had a great time there too. He'd talk about those two occasions every once in awhile. We are all very happy he spent that time with us. We are all sad to hear such terrible news and our hearts here in Deer Island go out to the family of Vern. God Speed & Bless You & Yours.##imported-begin##Leona Zimmer##imported-end##
