Susan Barbara Hill

Susan Barbara Hill, age 79, passed peacefully into eternity on May 8, 2024, at Forest Grove Rehabilitation and Care Center with her daughters by her side. Susan was born on April 29, 1945, in Portland, Oregon as the second of four children to Fred and Dorothy Matthies. She attended St. Ignatius School, then graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland. She was always athletic; she played volleyball, and was a softball pitcher in high school. Susan married Rodney Biggs in 1965, from which two daughters were born, Debbie and Karen. She worked at Meier and Frank Lloyd Center, a nursing home, and loved providing childcare throughout her life in her home on Mitchell Street. Years later after her divorce, she met and married Donald Hill on March 31, 1979, gaining two stepchildren, Janet and Mike. During their marriage they camped regularly with the Antler and Fin Club. They also traveled, spending time with their families, socializing, enjoying dinners, gardening, then later watching airplanes at the Portland Airport. Susan worked during this time at Payless Drug Store in Oregon City, eventually going on to work at Blue Cross in downtown Portland. Susan lived in SE Portland all her life, until moving to Spring Meadows Assisted Living in St. Helens during February 2021. She made many friends there and participated in most activities, especially bingo. She spent many hours watching for deer and birds out her apartment window, while working her word finds and eating ice cream. Susan is survived by her sisters, Janice Matthies and Rebecca Boyum; daughters Debbie Davis and Karen Biggs; stepchildren Janet LeBlanc and Mike Hill; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Dorothy Matthies, brother Rodger and his wife Sue, and her husband Don in 2014. Susan was deeply loved, funny, and devoted to her friends and family. A celebration of her life will be held June 21st, 2024, from 1:30pm-3:30pm at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. Afterwards, her urn will be placed with her mother Dorothy at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
