Ada Gortler's Obituary
Services for Ada Gortler, a lifelong resident of the local area, will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at 11:00 am, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Ada died on Friday, April 13, 2007, at the Good Samaritian Hospital in Portland. She was 93.
She was born October 27, 1913, in Hibbard, Idaho, to Theodore King and Jennett Agnes Riggs. As a child, she lived in Hibbard, Rexburg, Corral, Nampa, and Meridian Idaho and also in MacDoel, California, before moving to Oregon. Her family moved to Oregon when she was in the 8th grade and settled in the Yankton area where she graduated from 8th grade at the Yankton School.
She married Richard A. J. Gortler on July 14, 1930, in Vancouver, Washington. Following their marriage thy lived in four different homes which her husband built in the Yankton area before moving to Columbia City in 1946 where she lived the rest of her life.
She belonged to the Blue Angels where she did volunteer work at St. Helen's Hospital, and also worked in the nursing home which was attached to the hospital.
Ada was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she held various leadership and teaching postitions. She enjoyed oil painting, tole painting, rock hunting, handicrafts, spending some summer time near Prineville, her family, and especially loved her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters: Ada Janette Edwards of Columbia City, Dorothy JoAnna Weitzel of Wesport, and one son: Gordon Dickie Gortler of Columbia City. She leaves 22 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by her husband Richard A.J. Gortler on October 3, 1993; two sons, Richard Theodore Gortler on May 27, 1993, and Dennis Lee Gortler on August 25, 1993; and all seven of her brothers and sisters.
Committal Service and Vault Internment will be at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Scappoose.
