Ann P. Kucera Covel's Obituary
Anna Patricia Drapal was born on May 20, 1917 at the family farm near Nelson, Nebraska. She was the third of five children born to Jan and Ludmila Drapal. She graduated from high school with a teaching certificate and taught school for two years. It was during that time she met her first husband, Louie Joseph Kucera. They married in 1940 after she moved to Oregon where they eventually raised five children.
During those years, Ann stayed home growing and canning fruits and vegetables, cooking, cleaning and weeding, and raising chickens and children. She was also very devoted to the Catholic Church where she was active in the Altar Society and taught religion classes to children.
After Louie died in 1967, Ann worked as a nurse aide to help support the family. In 1971, she met and married her second husband, Harold Floyd Covel. They enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and being part of an extended family.
After Harold died in 1981, Ann was involved in quilting and volunteering at the Scappoose Seniors Thrift Shop. But, most importantly, Ann was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who unconditionally cared and supported her family throughout all these years.
Ann died on October 23, 2009. Surviving family members are her children, Roger Louis Kucera, Ronald Frank Kucera, Gerald James Kucera, Thomas Ray Kucera, Debra Ann Braun and step-son, Robert Dean Covel; her twelve grandchildren, Michelle Potter, James Kucera, Dena Smith, Sandra Freemon, Kristen Vedder, Amy Hugo, Michael Kucera, Timothy Braun, Tracey Allred, Dustin Kucera, Rachel Braun and Laura Braun; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Erma Kimminau Kirchen and Sr. Germaine Drapal, both of Nebraska.
A rosary service and funeral mass was held on October 26, 2009 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and interment was at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Scappoose, Oregon. Online condolences can be made at www.columbiafh.com.
