Betty Darleen Oliver

Betty was born November 16, 1928, in Newport, Nebraska to Clarence and Alice Carlisle Morrison, the 7th of 9 children. The family moved to Oregon in 1943. In 1946 Betty graduated from Milwaukie High School. Later that same year she married Orval Chester Oliver on December 7, 1946. They were married for 52 years until Orval's death in 1998. They had six children, four girls and two boys. Betty and Orval resided in St. Helens their entire married life. Primarily, they lived on a farm in the heart of the Yankton community for 35 years. From 1949 until 1956 they lived on Bunker Hill, then from 1956 until 1992 on Pittsburg Road nest door to the Yankton Store and Yankton School. Betty was active with the bowling league, the Yankton Parent Teachers Association, and in the Yankton Grange. Betty was primarily a homemaker, but she held part-time jobs over the years. She worked on the election boards, taught English as a second language, and volunteered at Hudson Park Elementary School. Family was very important to Betty and "Grandma Betty", as she was known, was very important to her family. She loved and valued each individual in her family, each of her children, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Grandma Betty joyfully attended ball games, music lessons, and swim lessons. She willingly chauffeured kids and grandkids wherever they needed to go and taught lots of teenagers to drive. Betty was known as a great cook and there was always room for one more person at the kitchen table. Her home always had an open door and became a second home for many. Her understanding heart and welcoming house always had room for all. Betty is survived by her children: Louise Brown of Longview, WA; Leslie Oliver of Thailand; Sara Coppock-Pisel of Medford, OR; and Carole Fischer of St. Helens, OR. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and her brother Kenneth Morrison of Goldendale, WA. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Orval Oliver in 1998, her son Roy Oliver in 1999, and her daughter Sharon Capron-Savage in 2011. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Sunset Park Community Church in St. Helens at 12:00 pm. Private burial will be at Yankton Hillcrest Cemetery.
