Blanche May Enlund's Obituary
BLANCHE (“PEGGY”) MAY ENLUND, 4/3/1925-10/4/2013
Blanche, known to most as Peggy, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 4, 2013, in St. Helens, Oregon. She was born and raised in Portland, and lived most of her life in the northwest. She and her husband, Capt. David Enlund, raised their 4 children in Clatsop County, where Peggy was very active within the community. She was well known as a talented community liaison. If there was a project or event that needed organizing, Peggy would be called upon to be its strong and efficient leader. She worked with many organizations, including State of Oregon Volunteer Services, the Rebeccas, the League of Women Voters and the Astoria Scandinavian Festival. In 1974, the Chamber of Commerce made her recipient of its George Award in recognition for her services. In 1978, the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners awarded her recognition for her services as co-chairman of the building committee for the Clatsop County Criminal Detention Facility. Peggy worked for the Astoria Chamber of Commerce for several years. She and David were active members of the Clatsop County Pioneer Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Astoria.
After her beloved David passed away in 1979, Peggy opened the “Under the Bridge” gift shop in Astoria, then later spent a number of years living with and near her children in Washington, Colorado and Indiana. Wherever she lived, she made her way to the local Chamber of Commerce and Senior Centers to offer her services as a community volunteer and to make quilts for sale or auction at charitable events. Peggy wrote many short stories, including “The Adventures of Big Boy…The Frog Who Couldn’t Swim,” an inspirational children’s story. Peggy returned to Oregon in 2006 and chose Clatskanie as her final home, as she loved small town life and the Columbia River, and it is near several of her children, and many friends and relatives dear to her. Peggy is survived by her 4 children, Greg Enlund, Jack Enlund, Kristen Enlund Koepping and Jahn Enlund-Zimmerle; and by brother and sister-in-law Robert and Maryann Raymond; John and Karel Ann Goodman, whom she considered a part of her extended family; and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
You are welcome to attend a celebration of Peggy’s life at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria, 1103 Grand Avenue, Astoria, Oregon, on October 12, 2013, at 3:00 PM.
