Catherine “Cathy” (Manning) Lakin, 77 of Scappoose, Oregon succumbed to cancer at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 3, 2017. She was born on March 2, 1940 to Marion “Al” and Eleanor (Reid) Manning in Orange, California.
Cathy is survived by her children, Dawnalyn (Michael) Hansen, Ralph Lakin, and Leslie (David) Elliott; 5 grandchildren, Desiree, Rachel, Jared, Brandon, and Lucas and 2 great-grandchildren, Chloe and Scarlett. She was preceded in death by her parents, Al & Eleanor Manning, her husband, Harold R. Lakin, Jr., and her grandson, LCpl Nathanial Windsor, USMC.
Cathy graduated from Tustin High School, Tustin, California in 1958. She married Harold R. Lakin, Jr. on June 27, 1959 in Tustin, California. Together they lived and raised their family in Costa Mesa, then later in Santa Ana until moving to Oregon City, Oregon in 1978. Cathy worked as a school bus driver for Tustin Unified School District and later for North Clackamas School District after their move to Oregon until she retired in 1998 as a route coordinator for special needs students.
Her proudest accomplishments were her marriage to Harold and raising her family. She was also very proud of her community service while President of the Mesa Harbor Club, and her relationships gained through caring for her special needs students. Cathy had a creative nature with everything she did whether it was knitting, crocheting or making cards for those she loved.
A special thank you to all the residents and caregivers at Brookdale Rose Valley who became her second family.
A Celebration of Life for Cathy will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 22, 2017 at Brookdale Rose Valley Assisted Living, 33800 SE Frederick Street, Scappoose, Oregon, 97056.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the American Cancer Society or the Special Olympics.
