Charles J. Wallis, Jr.'s Obituary
Charles J. Wallis, Jr. was bron on July 19, 1919 in Happy Hollow, Oregon to Charles J. Wallis, Sr. & Mary DuPontWallis.
He died at his home in St. Helens, with the support of his family and Legacy Hospice care givers on May 8, 2006 at the age of 86.
He was a lifelong resident of St. Helens. He was the thirteenth child of a family of fourteen siblings. He graduated from St. Helens High School Class of 1938. He enlisted in the Navy in December of 1941 and was honorably discharged December of 1945, having served in the S. Pacific.
He was employed for 40 years with what was first St. Helens Pulp and Paper and late Crown Zellerbach and finally Boise Cascade, retiring in 1977. He held the position of Pulp Mill Assistant Superintendent. He was instrumental in the start up and training program of the Kamyr and Pandia Digesters and was considered one of the West Coast's most knowlegeable men on the subject. He was crowned the "Kamyr King".
In August of 1946 he married the love of his life, Shirley Peterson. She died in September of 1988. This left a great void in his life. He was kept busy with his children, his grandsons and his great grandsons. He was known as "Gramps", "Pa" and "G.G. to his grandsons and great grandsons.
He was a proud man with the accomplishments he made in life, having come from such a large family and struggling during the Depression. His father elected to sell most of his 120 acres in Happy Hollow to feed his family and care for the young siblings. The Happy Hollow schoolhouse was built on land donated by his father.
His yard was his hobby until he was no longer able to keep it up. He took great pride in watching his grandson participate in sporting events. He had an emmense love for his grandsons and great grandsons. As an avid listener to the local radio station KOHI, he rarely missed the weekly call in show. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 1999 and the local VFW Post.
Survivors include: Son-Kenneth Wallis; Daughter: Joanne Eisenzimmer and her husband Jerry; his grandsons: Lance Garver and Bryan Garver and his wife Amy; great grandsons, Bryce Brewer and Brayden Garver; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing & Visitation: 9-5 Friday
Funeral service: Saturday 5/13/06 at 2:00 PM at Columbia Funeral Home.
Committal Service & Crypt Entombment: Columbia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum-Scappoose, OR., with military honor guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the local SNAPP program in care of the St. Helens Senior Center.
