Charles John Lohman, Sr. “Captain Chuck” November 28, 1931 ~ March 19, 2017
Charles John Lohman Sr. “Captain Chuck”, 85, of Scappoose, Oregon, died in his home March 19, 2017. He is survived by his 3 children Chuck Lohman Jr. (Julie Puderbaugh) of Oregon City, Oregon, stepdaughters Bailey Palmer, and Madison Blake, daughter Janet Lohman of Carbondale, Colorado, and Thomas Lohman (Jacki) and three grandchildren Sam, Emily & Ian Lohman of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He is also survived by sister Dorothy Karge of Brandon, Florida, and two brothers, Fred Lohman of Portland, Oregon, and Edward Lohman of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Lohman was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 28, 1931 to John & Ann Lohman. In 1949, at age 17 he joined the US Army, later becoming Sergeant Charles J. Lohman, Combat Forward Observer/Director Artillery 1st Cavalry 99th Field Artillery Battalion. Honorably Discharged in 1952. Awards earned: ARMY OF OCCUPATION MEDAL with Japan Clasp, NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, KOREAN SERVICE MEDAL with 1 Silver Star & 1 Bronze Star, UNITED NATIONS SERVICE MEDAL, REPUBLIC OF KOREA PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION.
He married and had 3 children, working as a Journeyman Printer for the Oregonian, then The Portland Reporter after enduring a 6-year Strike. Later he became a Longshoreman and Life Member of I.L.W.U., and a Member of Pacific Maritime Assoc. Having had a long history of boat building, the most recent a 42 ft. commercial fishing boat named “Janet L” which sold in the 90’s. As a skilled and successful commercial fisherman, he occupied many NW Coastal towns, marinas and communities during off-shore commercial fishing seasons. The beautifully crafted vessel “Janet L” being the platform for success in business and outrageous adventure. The “Janet L” leaves a legacy in the memories of many in the coastal ports.
Known as “Capt. Chuck” a very passionate member of the AU American Racing Pigeons Union since 2002, successfully breeding & racing pigeons worldwide & holding memberships to many worldwide Pigeon Racing Associations. He was also an Honorary Member Oregon State Sheriff’s Assoc. & Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife.
He was a very charismatic, focused and hardworking man having many interests & hobbies but especially loved his dog Sadie, his racing pigeon hobby, gardening, building, fishing & hunting.
He was a hero to many and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery Friday May 5, 2017 at 1:30pm. Followed by a Celebration of Life in Oregon City.
