Daniel Wootan's Obituary
Daniel R. Wootan passed away on May 27, 2015 with his family by his side, at the age of 74.
Daniel R. (Dick) Wootan was born 11/14/1940 to Maurice R. and Martha E. Wootan in Winnemucca, Nevada.
The family moved to Oregon in 1943 to the Parkrose area and to the Family Farm in Deer Island in 1947. The farm remains in the family to this day.
Dick attended school in Deer Island (Canaan) and graduated from St. Helens High School in 1959. He briefly attended Oregon Agricultural College (OSU) returning to St. Helens where in 1963 he married Carol Hanifin, they later divorced. In 1983 he married Carlene King.
Dick worked at Heinie's Feed Store and Safeway after Graduation and in 1964 started working at St. Helens Ice and Beverage. In 1976 he purchased a share at Multnomah Plywood, working there until its’ closure. He retired in 2002 from Armstrong World Industries. He formed the Old Guys Wood Company in his retirement.
He was active in the community all his life. He was Jaycees Man of the Year and their Distinguished Service Award winner in 1969. He was the rodeo announcer for Columbia County Fair and Rodeo and an active member of the fair board for 10 years, he was Santa Claus in the St. Helens Christmas parade for many years and he served as a local and national officer of FFA during high school.
Dick was a proud friend of Bill W, having achieved 35 plus years of sobriety and founded the St. Helens Alano Club along with several others. The Alano Club was his lasting achievement and he served on the board of directors for many years.
Dick is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carlene, son Rick of Cedar Mill, daughter Jill Culver (Kelly) of Astoria. His brothers Jim of Scappoose, and Doug (Barbara) of Columbia City. His step children Annette, Ray, and Jim (Jeanie), 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents and grandson Kasey Daniel.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Columbia City Community Center.
