Douglas C. Young's Obituary
Douglas C. Young, 89 years old, of Clatskanie, Oregon, passed away at his home on April 2nd, 2024. Doug was born on July 29th, 1934, in Zumwalt, Oregon, to Russell and Clara (Aschenbrenner) Young. During high school, he later met and married Sharon Ann Collinsworth, who he was married to for 70 years.
Doug worked at a variety of jobs in the area, including the local movie theater in Enterprise, Oregon, as well as at the local sawmill, Richfield gas station in Joseph, Oregon, and the pea fields in Milton Freewater. Doug and Sharon then began their family.
In 1959, he moved his family to Portland, Oregon, where he began working as a crewman on tugboats for Inland Navigation. In 1965, he went to work for the Portland Police Department as a harbor patrol pilot in the Willamette River. In 1973, he started working for the Portland Fire Bureau as a fire boat pilot. He retired from the Portland Fire Bureau in July of 1990.
Between 1969 and 1994, Doug owned and operated salmon-fishing charter boats out of Hammond, Oregon. In 1989, Doug and Sharon moved from Portland to a 40-acre property, commonly referred to as, “The Llama Ranch,” in Clatskanie, Oregon. During his retirement, he worked for Clatskanie school district from 1999 to 2009 as a school bus driver. He enjoyed “snow-birding” in Arizona with his wife, Sharon. He also enjoyed tinkering around his 40-acre property, always working on a variety of projects. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, clam digging, and visiting estate sales.
Doug is survived by his three children: sons Kim and Kelly, as well as his daughter Kayann. Doug was a grandfather to many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Sharon (2022), and two sons, Keith (1994) and Kerry (2020), as well as one of his grandsons, Gordon (1994).
He will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on April 20th, 2024, at 12:00 PM at the Nehalem St. Meeting Place; 290 South Nehalem St, Clatskanie, Oregon, 97016.
