Genevieve Lucy Howarth

Genevieve Lucy Howarth was born September 4, 1916, in Cambridge, Idaho to Henry Joseph and Edith Katherine McDonald DeVaney. She died Thursday September 10, 2009 at her home in St. Helens, Oregon. She had just turned 93 years old.
Her father was a mentor and helped her experience as much as possible. She shared a story of being held on his shoulders to see President Woodrow Wilson when he cam by train to Boise. When Genevieve was a young girl the DeVaney family moved to Oregon. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Medford, Oregon and her dad encouraged her to go to college. Genevieve was a 1933 graduate from Oregon Agricultural College now Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
Gen, as she became known was the secretary in the veterinarian department at OAC when she met her husband, Carl Howarth, who was a student at the time. They were married in 1941. Carl was in the ROTC before Pearl Harbor. While in the military they traveled throughout the United States. After the war, they settled back in Oregon where Carl started his veterinary clinic in Columbia County.
Gen was a classy lady who had many interests. She was avid golfer for the St. Helen's Women's Golf League. She was a member of the garden club, being quite proud of her azaleas and rhododendrons. She was also a member of the women's society at St. Frederic Catholic Church.
Two sisters, a brother, and her husband preceded Genevieve in death.
Survivors include cousins, Patrick Dugan of Columbia City, Oregon; Dr. Thomas Clark of Central Point, Oregon; Katherine Maffei of Libby, Montana; and Caroline Bard of Clemson, South Carolina; many nieces and nephews and friends.
A rosary and funeral Mass will begin at 10:15 am Thursday September 24, 2009 at St. Frederic Catholic Church in St. Helens, Oregon. A luncheon will follow in Buccini Hall.
Private inurnment will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
