Gladys Belle Carpenter's Obituary
Gladys Belle Carpenter passed away on May 30, 2009 at Emanuel Hospital I Portland, Oregon. She was 90 years old.
Gladys was born June 30, 1918 at Barnard, Kansas Lincoln County to her parents, Henry Fay Saunders and Minnie Belle Flint. Gladys live in Barnard the first 18 months of her life, and then moved to Gillette, Wyoming.
While in Gillette, Gladys went to Normal School to learn to become a teacher in Laramie, Wyoming. She taught in one-room schoolhouses in the early 1940s, until moving to Oregon.
In 1946, Gladys married Adolph Hank Hendricksen in Portland, Oregon. They had three children; Jay Hendricksen of Prineville, Oregon, Neva Rae Coghlin of Lander, Wyoming, and Lois Ann Wells of Waubun, Minnesota. Adolph Hank passed away in 1959.
Gladys married Garland Keith Carpenter on July 20, 1964 in St. Helens, Oregon, by the Justice of the Peace. Keith had three children by a previous marriage; Glovena Iriene Carpenter Willard of Tigard, Oregon, Gary Keith Carpenter of San Antonio, Texas, and Gale Loy Carpenter of Oakridge, Oregon. Gladys and Keith resided for the past 44 years on Armstrong Road in Scappoose, Oregon.
Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She always grew a big smile whenever her grand babies were placed in her lap.
Gladys's family was partial to her Vinegar Cookies and "Saturday Only" stew!
Being an avid fisherman, Gladys outfished Keith every time. She loved camping, fishing, gardening, sewing, knitting, cooking, walking, and Church work. She was Treasurer for 22 years at First Baptist Church of Scappoose, which she attended for fifty years. She also attended Grace Baptist of St. Helens, when her health allowed, and had connections with St. Helens Bible Church of St. Helens, Oregon.
Gladys is survived by her husband Keith Carpenter, six children, 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one brother; Bernard Saunders of Gillette, Wyoming.
Her father, mother, and 4 brothers and one sister preceded Gladys in death.
Funeral Services will be on June 10, 2009 at 11:00 am at Columbia Funeral Home at 681 Columbia Blvd. St. Helens, Oregon.
