A few things I remember about dad growing up was that if one of us kids wanted a pet, he would tell us “if you can’t eat it, it’s not really worth having”. But in the end because he was a caring daddy, he would cave in to a stray cat here and there, a couple of horses, or a dog.
Dad was so honest that at Christmas time or on his b-day, you would hold your breath when he would open his gift from you. If he didn’t like it, or wasn’t quite sure what it was, he would always have that look on his face that asked “What is this?!!!” It surely made the holidays comical.
Later in his life, for some reason he became an enemy of the state of California. We’re not sure why but for some reason if something bad happened in the world , you could count on him to blame California for it.
Dad loved his food. Whenever he had a delicious meal you can count on the next 45 minutes of him telling you everything about it… how he prepared it, what it consisted of, and how wonderful it tasted. A lot of us kids share this same trait with him.
Dad had his favorites. He used one mug for 30 or so yrs., wore the same shirts over and over again, and had his one and only hat…..the one he is being buried with. If you tried to expand his horizon by buying new and improved items, you could be sure they would stay right in the box they came in.
I hold on to these memories of my dad and the many more that aren’t told. I loved my dad for what he accomplished in his life, how he loved his family, and basically just who he was. He is one that holds the bar high. I hope we, his family, can keep his legacy going. Rest in peace Dad… You will forever be in my heart.##imported-begin##LaVonne LaLande##imported-end##
