Hyrum Dewey Kearsley's Obituary
Hyrum Dewey Kearsley, 97, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Dewey was born in Victor, Idaho on September 15, 1926, the eldest son of Hyrum Lambert Kearsley and Lucy Louise Dewey. A veteran, Dewey served his country in the Navy during World War II. On June 14, 1949, Dewey married his sweetheart, Wilma Noble Kearsley. Together they raised four children in St. Helens.
Dewey worked in the logging industry for over four decades. He was an avid golfer. Dewey loved sports, coached Little League baseball, was on the first wrestling team at St. Helens High School, and avidly attended St. Helens sporting events and other sporting events in support of his children, grandchildren, and many others.
Following Wilma’s death, Dewey married Carol Bennett on June 28, 2008.
Dewey was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days Saints. He served the St. Helens community as a bishop and leader, served a mission with his wife Wilma on Long Island, New York, and worked and served in the LDS Temple in Portland, Oregon.
Dewey was a kind, generous, and hardworking man who loved and served everyone, having never met a stranger. Dewey loved to laugh and tell stories. Dewey’s first priority and greatest love was his family with special love for his extended family members: his brothers and sister, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his nieces and nephews, his in-laws, his cousins, his uncles and aunts. Dewey will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Dewey was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Noble Kearsley in 2007; his brothers Robert (2019), and Kent (1992), and his two infant brothers: Forrest (1931) and Duane (1934), and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Bennett; his sister Renee Sullivan and brother Keith Kearsley; his four children, Kay Olson, Pat Kearsley, Stuart Kearsley, and Chad Kearsley; his fourteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on February 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days Saints, 2755 Sykes Road, St. Helens, Oregon. Dewey will be interred in Willamette National Cemetery.
