My deepest sympathy to the Daunhauer family. I am sorry about Rick and sorry for the grief that your family is experiencing.
Rick's gentleness, warmth, and ridiculously powerful intelligence were immediately apparent to me when I first met him. I loved being in a room with him and a group of people, and watching how he encouraged and celebrated everyone's contribution to the conversation. He is a lovely soul and he is dearly missed.

Sometime in 1975 this man – or a boy at the time came to my front door in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky with his brother and another friend to welcome me to the neighborhood and see if I wanted to come out and play. We rode bikes and skateboards. We started a club called the Louisville Investigation Agency or LIA. Somehow we got our pictures and a story in the newspaper. He became my best friend for the next year or so until I moved away. Even then we kept in touch by calling, writing and visiting each other. He loaned me the first copy of The Hobbit that I ever read. He was with me when I saw Star Wars for the first time and maybe the fifth time. I sang a song on a church radio program and dedicated it to those same kids who came to my door to welcome me to the neighborhood. We never completely lost contact with each other, but we drifted so far apart that I no longer knew him or what was going on in his life. He came to visit in the 80’s, I didn’t hear from him for most of the 90’s. I received a letter from him in maybe 1999. I received an email of a picture of his children in 2001 and then didn’t really hear from him again until the invention of Facebook. I last saw him at my Christmas Eve party on December 24, 2009. We did have a few emails and Facebook messages after that. My last contact with my old friend was through Facebook messaging on October 6, 2014. We were talking about skateboards. So now I learn that my friend from the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky has passed away in Portland Oregon. I love you and will miss you. Godspeed my friend.
