James (Buford) Hayes
February 17, 1918 – December 31, 2014
Buford passed away on December 31st at the age of 96; he was born in Sheridan, Oregon to James F. and Madie E. Hayes on February 17, 1918. He had one younger brother Edward Hayes whom passed while in the military.
Buford was a devoted family man, community leader, and friend to many. He loved the outdoors and especially the water. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1937. While in high school, he held various jobs, including delivering milk for 25 cents a day, picking strawberries and haying. In 1939 he joined the Oregon Forestry Department and married Phyllis Mawhirter. They had four children, Larry, Janet, Judy and Ricky. In 1957, he was transferred to Columbia County, serving as head of Fire Protection. Throughout the years he was also a dedicated leader in the St. Helens Charter of the Elks and took pride in their many works of charity. After retirement, he spent a great deal of time in the role of “Grandpa Hayes” and as friend to many around town.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis and two son’s Larry and Ricky.
Buford is survived by his daughters, Janet (Don) Kallberg of Warren, Oregon, Judith Crites of Star, Idaho, grandchildren, Jeff (April) Patton, Dan (Doniel) Hayes, Jason (Tracy) Crites, Debbie (Brad) Wilder, Ronda (Jeff) Miller, Lynette Hayes, Kristin (Jason) Brewster, Kimberly (Michael) Mulvahill, Dena Hayes and many great grandchildren. His love of family and role as our patriarch had a deep and lasting impact.
A service will be held at the St. Helens Elks Lodge, Friday, January 9, 2015 at 2:00 PM.
