Jerry M. Smith's Obituary
Jerry M. Smith was born on May 28, 1937 in Yreka, CA. to Clyde & Alberta Hayes Smith.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and died at a Portland hospital on March 18, 2007 at the age of 69.
He grew up in Libby, Montana and moved to Portland when he was a teenager, graduating from Benson High School in 1950. After High School he elisted in the Coast Guard for eight years.
He moved to California and for the Lockhead Space Program for four years. He moved back to Portland an worked for the Portland Reporter Newspaper for three years. He moved on to work at Moore Dry Kiln Company as a mechanical engineer. The company was bought out by Coe Manufacturing Company and he retired in 2001 after 35 years in the Lumber Industry.
He always loved working in his shop making things out of wood to sell at the farmers markets. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter when he was able to go.
Survivors include: Wife of thirty-five years: Bessie Smith of Warren; two stepchildren: Lou Ann Spencer of St. Helens; James Spencer of Portland; 2 grandchildren: Ariel & Haley Spencer of St. Helens; Many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life: Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the St. Helens Moose Lodge.
Military Honors & interment: Willamette National Cemetery-Portland, Oregon.
