John Henry Shaffer's Obituary
John H. Shaffer was died May 5, 2004 in Portland, Oregon. He was 85.
John was born November 8, 1918 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Eldors and Hattie Myer Shaffer. After graduating from school, John joined the Navy. He was an aircraft mechanic during WWII.
After his honorable discharge in 1946, he settled in California. There he fell in love with his sweetheart, and married Doris Matthews on February 9, 1947 in Santa Monica.
John had many different jobs, and wasn't afraid of hard work. Over the years he was a sheep herder, trucker, tire retreader, and ice man. He finally retired from maintenance in 1981 from a Southern California Gas Company. Then he and Doris moved to the Portland area to be closer to their children.
During retirement John had many hobbies which included traveling, gardening, fishing, wood craft, pinochle and square dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of St. Helens, two daughters; Irene Fuller of Warren and Dena Chesney of Scappoose; sisters Marian Orvredahl, charlotte Rose, Ruth Sehman and brother Jesse Shaffer; Grandchildren; Jeremy Jones, Irene Jones, Marceline Fuller and Betty Jo Chesney; 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and other relatives. He was preceded by his young son, Roy in 1959.
Graveside committal service was Monday, May 10th at Columbia Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Saturday, May 15th at St. John Lutheran Church in Portland at 11:00 AM. Contributions can be made to Hopewell House in Portland, or the St. John Lutheran Church Youth Fund.
