John Henry Quennoz February 9, 1920- August 21, 2016
John Henry Quennoz, born February 9, 1920 in Pacific, Missouri was received into God’s loving care on August 21, 2016, in St. Helens, Oregon. He was 96 years old and died peacefully. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Jean.
John’s parents, Victor and Julia, emigrated from Conthey Switzerland. John was raised in the small town of Pacific, Missouri. He joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1939. After the war he met the love of his life, Jean Flener, and they were married in the Base Chapel at Army Air Field, Gulfport, Mississippi on April 4, 1945. John transferred to the United States Air Force in 1945 and served his country for 30 years at bases across the country. John attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and was NCOIC of flight line operations. He was most proud of being a part of the implementation teams for the F-104 Starfighter and the C-9 Nightingale.
While in the Air Force, John and Jean raised four children- Gloria, Stephen, Mark and Catherine. John retired from the USAF on July 31, 1969 and relocated to O’Fallon Illinois. John had a second career with Hobart Corporation for ten years. In September 2000, John and Jean moved to St. Helens, Oregon.
John’s focus was his family and he was caring and supportive of his children. He was an avid golfer, a resourceful handyman and a gardener. He was known for telling stories of the early days of aviation and expressing his views of the world. He is remembered as a man of integrity and patience, a devoted and beloved father and a loyal and understanding grandfather.
John is survived by his daughter Gloria Frey (Robert) of Jacksonville, Arkansas, his son Stephen Quennoz (Jeanne) of St. Helens, Oregon, his son Mark Quennoz (Diane) of Monroe, New York and his daughter Catherine Haiek (Alex) of Camarillo, California as well as nine grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife Jean Quennoz, his brother Victor Quennoz, sister Marguerite Allen, sister Monica Coyner, sister Rose Marie Patrick and is survived by his sister Loretta Kerans of New Haven Missouri, sister Emilie Fischer of Pacific Missouri, brother James Quennoz of Bolivar, Missouri, sister Yvonne Jones of Pacific, Missouri and brother Kenneth Quennoz of Pacific, Missouri.
Funeral services will be at Columbia Funeral Home, St. Helens, Oregon at 4:00 pm on Saturday,
August 27, 2016.
Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon at 9:00 am on Monday, August 29, 2016.
