Karen Harvey—beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend—passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, at the age of 73. Karen’s life was a beautiful tapestry of adventure, kindness, and spirited devotion to the people and passions she held dear. Karen lived with warmth and authenticity, making every moment count and every person feel cherished. Born on August 10, 1951, in Longview, Washington, Karen was the eldest of Percy and Donna Smith’s four children. She embraced her role as older sister to Gwen, David, and Larry with a loving and steady heart. In 1972, she married Jim, her lifelong partner and fellow adventurer. Together, they built a home grounded in love, laughter, and shared dreams. They raised two wonderful children, Jeff and Betsy, and later welcomed Jeff’s wife, Kerri, and Betsy’s husband, Jason, into their circle of love. Karen's joy multiplied with the arrival of her grandchildren—Shelby (and her husband Steven), Gavin, and Brynlee—each of whom brought new light into her life. Karen’s love for family only grew when her father remarried. She welcomed her stepmother, Marian, and stepsiblings—Kathy, Judy, Sara, Doreen, and Rick—as treasured additions to her extended family. Karen was never one to follow the trends; she created them. Before coffee culture took root in every town, she was already serving espresso with a side of friendly conversation at a coffee cart inside Ray’s Market in Sisters, Oregon. Later, she found joy and community managing the golf shop at Black Butte Ranch, where she greeted everyone with her signature smile and open heart. Her adventurous spirit found its perfect outlet in bicycling. Karen didn’t just enjoy a casual ride; she completed the Cycle Oregon tour not once but twice, a testament to her grit and strength. These were moments that fueled her spirit. She also expressed herself through creativity: quilting vibrant masterpieces, tending to her garden with care, and always finding beauty in the details of daily life. Karen had a rare gift for bringing people together. Whether hosting family gatherings or welcoming a wide circle of friends, she added her personal flair to every occasion, infusing laughter, thoughtful conversation, and delicious culinary delights into every moment. She had a way of turning everyday moments into something special, whether through shared laughter, a heartfelt conversation, or the simple joy of a sunny afternoon spent among flowers. Above all, Karen’s greatest gift was her presence. She had a rare ability to make people feel seen, heard, and deeply loved. She turned ordinary moments into lasting memories through laughter, thoughtful conversation, or a quiet afternoon spent in nature. Karen Harvey’s story is not defined only by the years she lived, but by the countless hearts she touched. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who had the privilege to know and love her.
