Larry Robert Engstrom's Obituary
Larry Robert Engstrom September 17, 1939 ~ December 8, 2016
Larry Robert Engstrom, 77, passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, December 8th 2016. Larry was born in Portland, Oregon, on September 17, 1939. He attended Scappoose High School and graduated in 1957.
Larry married Judith Wright in 1959. Together they resided in their home in Scappoose, Oregon for 50 years and raised 3 children.
Larry worked at the local P&G Thriftway until he and Jake Hulsopple bought the Shell Station in Scappoose. Larry employed many community members and proudly gave many high schoolers their first job. Fifty years later, that service station is now Chevron and Engstrom Food Mart, still being run as a family business.
Volunteering and serving in the community was important to Larry. He served as a Scappoose Volunteer Firefighter and Fire Chief. He retired in 1982 after eighteen years of service, including seven as Chief. He was also a member of the Dad’s and Elks Club.
Larry was an avid supporter of SHS athletics and followed many young athletes through their sports careers, including his seven grandchildren. During the 1998 football season, Larry and Judi began hauling the varsity team’s equipment to and from their away games. Throughout the next 13 years, he enjoyed being a part of the football community and meeting so many young athletes.
Larry is survived by Judi, his wife of 57 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Cheryl Engstrom; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kari Engstrom; daughter and son-in-law, Kristal and Herb Bailey; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother, Don Engstrom and sister-in-law Alice Engstrom, and their family as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by parents Joe and Violet Engstrom as well as brothers Dick and Gerald Engstrom.
A Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, December 18th, 4:30 pm in the Scappoose High School gymnasium, 33589 SE High School Way in Scappoose.
