Lawrence Neal Gallowa's Obituary
Lawrence "Larry" Neal Gallowa of St. Helens, Oregon lost his battle with lung cancer on April 24, 2009 at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital. He was 75.
Larry was born in Dighton, Kansas on January 1, 1934 to his parents Theodore and Dorthea Appl Gallowa. As a young boy he lived in Kansas and Colorado before moving to Portland, Oregon in the forties.
After graduation from Benson Tech High School, he served in the US Air Force as a Fighter Interceptor and was honorably discharged from Active Service November 6, 1956 and from the Air Force Reserves in 1960. He was employed at Oregon Steel Mills from 1959-1989 at which time he retired as a supervisor with 30 years of service.
Larry married in 1958 and had two daughters. He relocated his family to Deer Island, Oregon in 1971 and remained in the area until the time of his death.
Larry loved spending time with his family, his grandchildren in particular and his many other friends. He enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, sports, woodworking, art collecting, reading, playing video games with the grandchildren, and had an extreme fondness for his pets and other animals.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Earlene Simmons Gallowa of St. Helens, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Douglas Callahan of Warren, Oregon; daughter, Dorothy Gallowa of Sisters, Oregon; his grandchildren, Kyle Benzo of Corvallis, Oregon; Megan and Kevin Callahan of Warren, Oregon; his sisters, Glenda McDaniel of Wichita, Kansas; Theodora Frost of Crooked River Ranch, Oregon; Helen Young of Black Butte Ranch, Oregon; brother, Roy Douglas Gallowa of Beaverton, Oregon; and his many nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Ann Fisher.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 1:00pm at the Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Columbia County Humane Society, 20884 Oregon Street, St. Helens, Oregon 97051.
