Leon Archie Frappier's Obituary
Leon Frappier, a very much-loved Dad and Grandpa passed away peacefully, January 29th dreaming of catching “the big one.” He left behind a legacy of strength, competitive spirit and kindness all rolled into one giant human sticky bun, which he also loved to eat. His kindness and gentleness of heart was something he hid well but was demonstrated many times, often to complete strangers and unknown to others.
Leon was adventurous, willing to take risks and embrace life and its joys. Spending 12-hour days braving rain, wind and 6’ waves to catch any salmon, sturgeon or shad was a great day, Getting Par on any hole was reason for celebration and to drink that beer he snuck into the golf bag. Horseshoes, darts, horse riding, amusement parks and any activity he could do, especially with his family, brought the greatest joys. Not quite as great as that “29” crib hand. He could remember every cribbage hand and repeat play by play to the next 10 people he saw that day. He was also artistic and creative creating beautiful intarsia wood and scrollwork. He would bring carloads of North Dakota cedar home spilling out of the trunk and strapped to the top of the car to make the most beautiful furniture, trays and bowls. Nothing was out of bounds for him to try, even oil painting.
Leon was born October 20, 1931 in Fryburg, North Dakota and married Caroline. Son of Helen and Harvey, he had four sisters and one brother, Lucille, Harriet, Caroline, Sylvia and James. Leon’s four children Dennis, Carrie, Julie and Jeremy all continue on in life inheriting his work ethic, integrity, competitiveness and love of all things outdoors. He touched each in very different yet loving ways that will forever endure in their hearts.
Funeral services for Leon’s family and friends to gather one last time in his memory will be held February 19th, at the St. Fredricks church in St Helens, Oregon, with mass at 10:00am and a memorial service to begin at 10:30am. In honor of Leon’s service for the United States Army, and the purple heart he earned during the Korean war, a Graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland Oregon, at 2:00pm on the same day, following the mass.
