Lorne E. Hampton's Obituary
Lorne Everett Hampton, 81, of Columbia City, Oregon, died December 22, 2013 at Community Home Hospice Center in Longview, Washington of complications due to cardiovascular issues and cancer.
Lorne was born to Luke and Elsie Hampton on July 7, 1932 in Harlowton, Montana. The family relocated to Marion, Oregon in 1936. He attended Marion Elementary School and Jefferson High School. Lorne married Berta Fay Parker in 1952. Shortly after they were married, Lorne was drafted and spent 2 years in the U.S. Army. In 1966 they moved to the St. Helens, Oregon area.
He cherished his family, loved fishing, gardening, and driving. Lorne drove trucks for a living until 1972 when he and wife, Berta, started Hampton Construction. They built 150 homes mostly in Columbia County. He retired in 1997, but is fondly remembered by some of the children in the family as “Hammer Man”.
In retirement, he still loved driving, so he and Berta traveled in motor homes and travel trailers. He drove to all the 50 United States except Hawaii. He enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, and raising watermelons in his garden at home in the summer, which he generously shared with family and friends. When health problems kept him from traveling, he took up baking. He searched the internet for recipes and made many pies and cakes to share with family. Most of them were chocolate.
Lorne is survived by his wife: Berta, 2 children: Brenda (Dennis) Farland of Longview, and DeWayne (Debora) Hampton of Columbia City, 6 grandchildren: Christopher Scheu, Joseph (Eleanor) Farland, Angela (Gabino) Salgado, Ryan (Danielle) Hampton, Nikki Farland, and Shawn Hampton, 13 great grandchildren, 3 brothers: Lyle Hampton, John Hampton, Donald Hampton, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Millie HIce, in 2005.
