Lyle H. Vandercook's Obituary
Lyle H. Vandercook of Scappoose died August 28, 2007, at the age of 95, with family members at his side.
Lyle Henry was born May 18, 1912, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Faye and Katharine Vandercook.
He graduated from South High School in Grand Rapids in 1931 along with late U.S. President Gerald R. Ford.
In 1943, Lyle founded his family business Oregon Handling Equipment, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. He was a member of the Rotary of Portland for more than 30 years. Lyle met his wife Juanita at a Halloween party in 1946 and they were married January 30, 1947. Lyle offically retired in 1993 and sold the business in 1998. He moved to Scappoose in 1999 to be closer to his son Lynn and his family.
As a couple, the Vandercook's traveled the world. Bothe Lyle & Juanita enjoyed planting and tending their gardens filled with a rainbow of flowers and trees. Lyle loved his sports and watched football and baseball whenever he could find a game on TV. He was so excited when he watche the Oregon State Beavers take the Championship! Lyle enjoyed being with his family but, most of all the great-grandkids were the ones that brightened their "Great Papa's" day. He also enjoyed seein little "Dixie Dog" everyday when his son Lynn came to visit. His kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids will never forget his favorit saying, "You're for the birds."
Lyle is survived by his children; son Lynn and wife Linda Vandercook of Scappoose, Terry Vandercook of Billings, Montana, daughter; Jerry and husband Michael Zenner of Harper, Texas, Grandchildren;Jerry Vandercook and his wife Rona, Philip Vandercook and his wife Julie, Jaime Arnott and her husband Scott, Julie Vaughn and her husband Aaron, Michael Vandercook, Jennifer Jewell and her husband Chris, Anjee Zable and her husband Curtis, and Nichole Mariakis. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren; Kyle, Alex, Tyler, Kendra, CJ, Kaylee, Jessica, Derick, Ben, Kaci, Cameron, and baby Gavin due in November to Jennifer and Chris.
He was preceded in death by his wife Juanita in 1991, brother Wayne Vandercook of Grand Rapids in 1995, and sister Ruth David of Portland in 2007.
Memorial Services will be held September 14, 2007 at 2:00 pm, at the Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens, Oregon.
Family Interment will be at Columbia Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Scappoose Fire Department or the Scappoose Senior Center.
