Lyle S. Makin's Obituary
Graveside Services will be held, 2pm, Saturday, March 24th at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Scappoose. Visitation, 10-5 pm, Friday at Columbia Funeral Home. Lyle passed away on his birthday, at his home surrounded by his children and family. He was 93 years old.
Lyle was born March 19, 1919 in Joseph, Oregon to Lial Harley and Margaret Mae Simmons Makin the 3rd of 5 children. Raised in Joseph he graduated from the high school and then went to work.
Lyle spent almost all his working life in the lumber industry, starting as log truck driver in Oregon and Idaho.
On May 10, 1949 he married the love of his life, Lois Jean Risley; they were married for almost 53 years and raised 6 children together. Lois preceded him in death in 2001.
In 1955 he moved the family to Cambridge, Idaho where he worked for almost 25 years. When the mill shut down in 1976 he helped to disassemble and then reassemble the mill in the Philippines.
The family moved several more times before settling in Scappoose in 1981 where he retired from Friesen Lumber Company as Mill Superintendent.
Lyle enjoyed the outdoors and spent time with his family fishing, hunting, and camping. He was an all around handyman and could fix pretty much anything around the house including remodeling the family's kitchen. He took a keen interest in radio controlled airplanes and even made a few. One had a wingspan of over 10 feet. He was also a ham radio operator for many years. Lyle was involved in his community as a member of the Scappoose Moose, the St. Helens Elk Lodge and the R.C. Flyers in Scappoose.
Lyle is survived by his children, Mike Carey of Oak Grove, Deana Wells of Scappoose, John Makin of Canby, Kathy O'Conner of Oregon City, Shelly Knewitz of Portland, sister; Faye Moreau of Sutherlin, brother Don Wysong of Battle Ground and 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He his preceded by his daughter Patricia Wordell and 3 of his siblings.
