Mabel Irene “Jean” Quennoz
March 18, 1924- February 10, 2015
Mable Irene “Jean” (Flener) Quennoz, born March 18, 1924 in Stephensport, Kentucky, was received peacefully into God’s loving care on February 10, 2015. She was 90 years old.
Jean’s father, Frederick, was an Army veteran and mother, Marie, was a practical nurse. Jean was raised in Evansville, Indiana and was in the Hillcrest Home for a period of time when her mother was stricken with tuberculosis. She graduated from Reitz High School and was most proud of being a finalist in the Miss Indiana Pageant in 1940. Jean worked at Servel Corp., fabricating parts for the P-47 Thunderbolt during World War II.
After the war she met the love of her life, John Quennoz, and they were married in the Base Chapel at Army Air Field, Gulfport, Mississippi on April 4, 1945. John and Jean served in the Air Force, stationed at bases throughout the country while raising a family of four children. They retired from the USAF in 1969, after 30 years of service and relocated to O’Fallon, Illinois. Jean and John moved to St. Helens, Oregon in 2000 to be near their son’s family.
Jean’s focus was her family and she was caring and supportive of her children. She was very active in the Air Force service clubs, volunteering at the Scott AFB hospital, raising money with Bingo and serving in leadership positions. At age 50 she went back to school and completed a degree program. In St. Helens she was a member of the Zenith and Quarter women’s clubs and was a loyal supporter of the local Senior Center. Jean was known for loving to dance, for gardening and for going to lunch with friends. She is remembered as a woman of integrity and patience, a beloved mother and loyal and devoted grandmother.
She is survived by her husband John, her daughter Gloria Frey (Robert) of Jacksonville, Arkansas, her son Stephen Quennoz (Jeanne) of St. Helens, Oregon, her son Mark Quennoz (Diane) of Monroe, New York and her daughter Catherine Haiek (Alexander) of Camarillo, California, as well as nine grandchildren. Jean is preceded in death by her brother Jess and is survived by her stepbrother, Pete Knowles of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Funeral services will be at Columbia Funeral Home, St. Helens, Oregon on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 3:30pm. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
