Maggie Mae Hansen's Obituary
Maggie Mae Hansen
October 27, 1915 ~ October 4, 2007
Maggie Mae was born in Beersford, South Dakota, on October 27, 1915 to Christian and Mary Hendricksen Jensen. Her parents and four siblings lived in a plain white five-room farmhouse. Eventually they built on an upstairs because Maggie?s father?s family from Denmark came to live with them. They raised live stock and a big garden on 80 acres. Everyone worked hard, but there was always plenty of love to go around and people to share the chores. Maggie learned a strong work ethic on the farm.
The family lived 15 miles from town, so Maggie was only able to attend two terms of high school. At 15 she began working as a telephone operator and then a bookkeeper.
Maggie?s future husband, Harold Hansen, lived on a farm only 2 miles away. He would pick Maggie up on Saturday nights to go dancing; and on Wednesday?s for ten-cent movie night. Maggie was the pitcher on her softball team and Harold would always come watch her games.
On May 17, 1941 Harold and Maggie were married in Sioux City, Nebraska. The newly weds soon headed for California, but stopped in St. John?s, Oregon, along the way where Harold found work at the Woolen Mill. Here they had their first two daughter?s Carol and Linda. In 1946 they moved to Yankton, rented a home and some land and began growing strawberries. This is where their youngest, Gary, was born. Soon after, Maggie and Harold moved to St. Helens and built a house and Harold went to work for the Firtex Lumber and Sawmills Union. They had a good life.
Maggie was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in St. Helens. She enjoyed spending time with her family, listening to Lawrence Welk, quilting, tying, sewing, and doing embroidery.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband in 1988. She is survived by: daughters; Carol Korpela of St. Helens, and Linda Becker of Portland, son; Gary Hansen of Columbia City; and brother; Maynard Jensen of Portland; seven grandchildren; Bradley and Susan Korpela, Amy Cresto, Scott and Zachary Becker, Troy Hansen, and Tracee Simpson; and 9 great grandchildren.
