Marvin Lyle Formo, age 79, of St. Helens, Oregon, died June 17, 2017 at his residence. He was born on September 2, 1937 in Ottertail, Minnesota to Clifford and Gladys (Thompson) Formo. He grew up in Dalton and attended District 8 School in Dalton and the Fergus Falls High School.
Marvin joined the United States Navy in October 1954 and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in June of 1974. During his service in the Navy he served on-board a number of naval ships including: cruisers, destroyers, destroyer tenders, and attack aircraft carriers. During his naval service, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with combat “V” and 2 stars, navy unit citations with 2 stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Action Medal, 1st Class) Good Conduct Medal with 5 stars, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 stars and the RVN Campaign Medal.
After his retirement from the Naval Service, Marvin moved to Missoula, Montana and attended the University of Montana. He graduated in 1981 with a BA in Business/Education, he then moved to Mandaree, North Dakota where he taught high school business classes at the joint state/BIA school on the Fort Bertholt Indian Reservation. In 1984, he accepted a position with the State of Oregon Judicial Department and served in various positions in Newport, Salem, Oregon City and St. Helens. He retired as a Trial Court Administrator of the Columbia County State Courts in 1998.
Marvin was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 591, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4022 and American Legion Post 155.
Survivors include his sister Clarice, 4 step-children; Christine, John, Susan and Jeffrey. Grandchildren; Aaron, Katherine, Zach, Jordan and Kayla. Great grandchild Madeleine. Numerous nieces and nephews and his companion dog Izzy.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, his lovely wife Lorena, brothers; Glenn, Dell, Gene, Carroll and his sisters; Doris, Mavis and Florence.
Marvin will be cremated and his ashes will be buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Columbia Funeral Home and Cremation Center is handling all arrangements. The deceased has requested that no memorials be given.
