Maxine - Loyd's Obituary
Maxine Loyd
November 10, 1923 – July 6, 2011
Maxine Loyd passed away on July 6th of a traumatic brain injury. She was 87 years old. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter; sister, Dorothy; son Frank and wife Dee; son Robert and wife Jackie; 7 grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.
Maxine was born in Ursula, Kansas to Robert and Dorothy Hubert Smith. She had seven brothers and sisters. Her father was a dirt farmer and shortly after the dust bowl they moved to St. Helens, Oregon. After graduating from St. Helens High School she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and worked at the Columbia County Court House. Walter and Maxine were married September 23, 1945 at the United Methodist Church in St. Helens. She joined Walter and his mother on the family farm in Deer Island. Frank was born in 1946 and Robert in 1950. The Family spent their time farming, gardening, claiming, hunting, fishing, camping and traveling.
From 1958 to 1973 they owned and operated Lost Lake Resort in Mount Hood National Forest. They also worked "off Season" from the lake resort at Houlton Hardware in St. Helens. They retired to Deer Island where they continued to have a large garden, raising cattle and hay.
Maxine was active in the Deer Island Grange, The Deer Island Women's Club, worked for the Columbia Elections Department, helped with 4-H clubs and the Boy Scouts. She loved to quilt, sew, knit and crochet. She was famous for her delicious baked goods, collecting antique glassware, canning and ceramics. Her family was her pride and joy. She and Walter continued to attend dances on Saturday nights at Pumpkin Ridge Grange including the week before her death.
Those of us who had an opportunity to know her have been truly blessed. There was always a hug and fresh baked goodies waiting when you stopped by the home. She will be deeply missed.
Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to the St. Helens Senior Center or charity of your choice.
Funeral Services are being held, 10:00 AM, Monday, July 11th at Columbia Funeral Home, Private Family Committal and vault interment at Bethany Memorial Cemetery, Warren, Oregon
