Muriel Esme Welt's Obituary
Mrs. Welt passed away in St. Helens, February 19th. She was 100 years old.
Muriel was born March 19, 1910 at Wimbledon, England, to George and Zena Grattan. She was the youngest of four children, two sisters and one brother. Her family came from England in 1916 on the last passenger ship during WWI. The ship was chased across the Atlantic Ocean by a German submarine.
Muriel graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco, California. At the age of sixteen she was hired as a switchboard operator and attended night school for typing and shorthand. She worked as a secretary for insurance lawyers. Muriel also worked for many years for an engineering firm that was involved in building the Golden Gate Bridge.
She married Dr. William Welt on January 23, 1936 in San Francisco. They had four children. Muriel worked for her husband at his optometry practice in Modesto, California for 27 years as his office manager. They retired and moved to Port Angeles, Washington, in 1973. William preceded Muriel in death in May 1983.
Muriel enjoyed doing outdoor activities with her family. She was an avid hiker, camper, and bird watcher. She also enjoyed traveling. Muriel has lived in the St. Helens area for the last 17 years.
Muriel is survived by her son, Dr. Roger and wife Catherine Welt of Santa Maria, California, daughter, Julia "Penny" Leininger of Gresham, and son Andrew Welt of Las Vegas, NV. She has 4 Grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Her son Grattan Welt, preceded her in death.
