Norman Kay Jones' Obituary
Norman Jones
August 11, 1924 to June 1, 2014
Norman Jones passed away and joined his late wife Barbara on Sunday, June 1, 2014 after a brief illness. Norm was 89 years of age. Norm was born August 11, 1924, to Clifton and Katy Jones in Union Mills, Indiana. He was raised in the St. Helens area on small family farms with his two brothers. He served in the US Marine Corp in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War, and rose to the rank of Sergeant. Norm returned to the St. Helens area where he married Barbara Pennington in 1946. Norm and Barbara lived in St. Helens where they operated Penny Marine. As a result of business and the love of boating they were active with the Trailer Sailors and Portland Yacht Club. Eventually they built (in the late 90's) a home on the banks of the Columbia River in Columbia City where they became known for the annual viewing party of the sailing of the Christmas Fleet from Portland. Norm was absolutely consumed by his love of airplanes. He sold them, he flew them and if three pilots got together anywhere in the world he was there in the middle of the discussion. Norm attended many meetings of the Columbia Aviation Association at the Aurora, Oregon Airport as well as being a charter member of the Aero Club in downtown Portland. He maintained a hanger at the Scappoose Airport which he kept in a spotless condition. Usually there was an aircraft in the hanger which was in the process of being returned to like new condition before being sold. Norm was also active in the Masons, and an avid supporter of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Norm and Barbara were accomplished travelers who visited foreign lands including Canada, several stops in Europe including The Netherlands, Scotland and other European locations. Norm was also an accomplished wood worker and spent many hours in his shop. Norm was a dedicated pen maker. The pens were never sold but rather given away. All it took was the mention of how nice a pen was and the commenter was likely to receive it as a gift. Norm was proceeded in passing by his wife of 67 years Barbara and a son Gary. He is survived by sons Mike (Carol) Jones, Lynn (Debbie) Jones both of St. Helens and daughters Judy (Rick) Williams of Beaverton and Kay (Mike) Brown of Tillamook and daughter-in-law Sandy Garrett of Bremerton Washington. Also surviving are brothers Wayne Jones of Greenbrae, California and Alan (Bud) Jones of Rainier, Oregon. There are 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and an Argentina exchange student Daniel Seghezzi. A celebration of Norman's life will take place at the Columbia Funeral Home, 681 Columbia Blvd. St. Helens, Oregon at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 21, 2014. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor, Hawaii or Hospice.
Arrangements are in care of Columbia Funeral Home, St. Helens, Oregon.
