Pauline Charlotte Butts' Obituary
She attended grade school in Independence, Oregon and graduated from what was then caled ''Oregon Normal School'' at Monmouth, Oregon in 1928. After teaching all eight grades near Dallas, Oregon for one year she went to Chapman School to teach, located out of Scappoose, there she taught the four upper grades and later on, the four lower grades. There she met her husband to be, Ralph Butts, who was an engineer on the Clark and Wilson logging train, taking the logs from Vernonia to the river below Scappoose, which tracks passed the school house. After picking a bouquet of lilacs from someone's yard on the way back to Vernonia, Ralph dropped the flowers off at the school, where Pauline picked them up. Notes were also passed back and forth between them, with the eighth grade boys putting the notes on a pole near the track for Ralph to reachas he went by. This worked out fine, as Ralph asked for a date. They were married onDecembver 23, 1931. They lived in Vernonia several years, then moved to St Helens where Ralph was riased. She worked in Kerr's Store for a while, built a house in 1940, she taught at McNulty, McBride and condon Schools. She retired in 1973.She loved animals. Ralph and Pauline celebrated their 50th wedding ann in 1981, Ralph died in 1986. Survivors include, her brother and wife, Alva and Dorothy Dickinson of Salem.
