Pearl Evangeline Lewis' Obituary
Pearl Evangeline Hipple Lewis passed away on October 10, 2008 at the home of her daughter, Lillian Gore. She was 97.
Pearl was born to John Lee and Rosa Matilda Wilcox Hipple in Ulysses, Kansas. She grew up in western Kansas, moving often to places her father, a minister of the gospel, was called to serve. Most of her school years were spent in Ford, Kansas, she graduated from high school in Bresse Nazarene Bible College in Hutchinson, Kansas.
She came with her family to Sauvie Island, Oregon in September 1936 and married John Clarence Lewis on November 24, 1937, whom she had previously known in Dodge City, Kansas. They moved to the Chapman area west of Scappoose in 1940 and to her present home in December of 1942. Pearl worked in the home all her life raising three children and helping her husband with cattle, farming and preserving food grown on the farm for the family. Husband, Clarence became disabled in a horse accident early in their marriage. Pearl worked beside him to maintain the farm and care for the family.
In 1960 Pearl and Clarence Lewis started a Sunday School at the Chapman Community Hall, now the Chapman Fire Hall, and a few years later they donated land to the Church of God to build the Chapman Community Church of God. Clarence did much of the labor himself even though he was on crutches. The first service was held on November 5, 1967. Clarence died in 1976 and on September 21, 1977 Pearl donated three additional acres to the Church of God to build a new and larger church building. Pearl taught a Sunday School class from 1942 until she was well into her eighties.
Pearl Lewis is survived by two daughters, Lillian Gore and Burnice Van DeZande, both of Scappoose. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Clarence Lewis in 1976 and a son, Kenneth Lewis in 1963.
