Obituary of Richard Floyd Gilbert
Funeral Services will be held, 11am, Thursday, January 19th at Columbia Funeral Home, with Committal, Military Honors and vault interment at Columbia Memorial Gardens. Richard passed away on January 13th of an apparent heart attack in Portland. He was 84 years old.
Richard was born June 17, 1927 in Marinette, Wisconsin to Floyd and Aline DuHaime Gilbert, the 2nd eldest of 8 children. When he was 16 years old the family moved out to St. Helens, a year later in 1943, Richard joined the Merchant Marines. In 1946 Richard was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during WW II and Korean War in the United States Navy and the National Guard. He was finally discharged to civilian life in January of 1950.
.After the war Richard moved back to St. Helens and went back to work at St. Helens Pulp and Paper / Boise Cascade where he retired from 35 years later in 1985. He married Olive on March 23, 1967 in Kelso, Washington. Richard was a life member of the St. Helens Elks Lodge, BPOE #1999, and a active member of the Energizer Club of Boise Cascade Retired employee, donating his time making wheel chair ramps for the elderly in the community. Richard loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. He was a farmer, raising cattle on their property and a huge Green Bay Packer fan. After retirement Richard and Olive did a lot of traveling. Driving across the United States and Canada visiting friends and relatives, spending time in Spain, and keeping a cabin in La Pine for 30 years.
Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years; Olive Gilbert, son; Curtis Michael Gilbert of St. Helens, Step-sons; Clinton Timmons of Chipiona, Spain and Carl Timmons of Rainier, 8 grandchildren, siblings; Roger Gilbert of Yankton, Jeannette Fischer of Scappoose, June Lee of St. Helens, Doris Hlavinka of St. Helens, Gail Renner of Long Beach, Washington and Verna Shell of St. Helens.
