Roy Lester Long's Obituary
Roy Lester Long passed away on October 31, 2025, in Sedro Woolley, Washington. He was born on June 9, 1934. In Ava Missouri, to Lester, and Audrey Long. Roy was the third child of their family of four.
Roy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April of 1952 and served during the Korean War. After completing his active duty with Marines, He met and married Marilyn Knight in January 1957 in Walla Walla, Washington. They later moved to LaGrande Oregon and had three sons. They divorced in 1975.
Roy continued his commitment to national service by joining the Army National Guard, while working in LaGrande, Oregon for the Union County Assessor office. His dedication spanned decades, culminating in an honorable retirement in January 1980 with the rank of Major.
Roy turned his focus of public service to the local level. Working as a deputy assessor for Dick Hartsock and later being elected county assessor for Union County. His expertise and dedication led him to further roles at the Clackamas County Assessor’s office and eventually to the Columbia County Assessor’s Office until his retirement.
Roy met Judy Griffith through the Oregon Assessors Association, they were married in June 1980 and were together until her death in March 2017. They shared a deep bond together and found joy in traveling and fishing on their boat on the Columbia River. Vacationing in Hawaii and Mexico although Cozumel, Mexico was their favorite, they cherished their time together on the water, whether boating or crabbing with friends and family, always enjoying each other’s company.
In December of 2024, Roy moved to Sedro Woolley, WA to be closer and cared for by his son & daughter-in-law Doug & DeAnn Long.
He is lovingly remembered by his sons: Daniel L Long; David W Long and his wife Marcy; Douglas K Long and his wife DeAnn. Roy also leaves behind four grandchildren Shawna, Nathan, Justin, and Helena; as well as ten great-grandchildren Marissa, Anthony, Brianna, Braylan, Easton, Lexington, Colten, Bristol, Scottlyn, and Jameson. He also has a sister, Mary Hines, and a brother Bart Long, three nephews and niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Audrey, a sister Frieda Echols, and his loving wife Judy.
We would also like to thank Brookdale Adult Living in Scappoose Oregon, and Country Meadow assisted living in Sedro Woolley WA, along with Alpha Home Health, and Hospice of the Northwest for taking such wonderful care of him. Everyone was wonderful.
Roy’s legacy of service and devotion lives on through those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all whose lives he touched.
