Russell Edward McFann's Obituary
Russell Edward McFann
March 12, 1922 ~ September 28, 2015
Russell Edward McFann, born March 12, 1922, in Whittier, California, passed peacefully September 28, 2015 at age 93. A longtime resident of El Monte, California and Warren, Oregon, Russ and his wife Lois were united in marriage in 1947, and celebrated 62 wonderful years until her death in 2010.
Russ is survived by: his four children, Gloria Snow, Derek McFann, Joy Ruckel and Elena Dunn; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. His ashes will be laid to rest next to those of his beloved wife, at Riverside National Cemetery, in California.
During WWII Russ took part in the liberation of France as an Artillery Forward Observer in the 36th Infantry Division. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign ribbon with three battle stars. He retired as a Captain after 20 years in the Army, Army Reserve, and California National Guard. He donated his time generously to the American Legion El Monte Post 261, and the American Red Cross.
A graduate of El Monte High School and Occidental College, Russ was employed by the El Monte Union High School District for 60 years as a U.S. History and Social Studies teacher.
He was a member of the Plymouth Presbyterian Church in St. Helens and an affiliate member of the Village Presbyterian Church in Arcadia, California.
Russ touched the hearts of all those who knew him. His strong faith and love of family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren is what made “Poppie,” Grampa, truly an inspiration.
He stayed active with his favorite pastime of riding his bicycle, and enjoyed his conversations with friends and family. He had a wealth of knowledge, which he shared openly, and loved discussions on local and U.S. politics. Russ was at his best watching his great-grandkids in their sports or when they entertained him. His family was his greatest treasure.
Dad, now you are with Mom, the love of your life. We love you and you will be dearly missed by us all.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at 2 p.m., at the Plymouth Presbyterian Church, in St. Helens, Oregon.
