Born Violet Riggs in Marcola, Oregon she lived in Garabaldi, Oregon until her mother's sudden death when she was only eight. Her father moved the family of three boys and Violet to a farm near Springfield, Oregon. At age sixteen, she left home to become a beautician. She worked as a waitress at the St. Helens Café' in Old Town. There, she met the "love of her life," Peter Hald and they were married. Pete owned a radio repair business, and after their marriage, Violet helped out in the store. During this time, they were blessed with their daughter, Doris. After Pete's untimely death, Violet sold the radio repair business to her brother Glen. Some years later, she met and married Tom Sherlock but was later divorced.
Violet returned to beauty school and obtained her license. She worked as beautician in St. Helens for more than sixty years before retiring as owner and operator of her own beauty shop. Between pin curls and perms, Violet was known for entertaining her clients with a lively sense of humor by telling jokes while she meticulously cut, clipped, colored, curled, and combed out hair.
Her greatest joy came from caring for her family. Violet showed her love and compassion through everyday acts of kindness. She often could be found making her most popular dishes, like bread pudding or fried chicken at the request of family or even friends of the family. She mended jeans that were beyond repair, ironed shirts, and could clean anything. Most of all, she adored her daughter and over the years, taking care of her three grand children and five great grand children.
Violet had a fun loving and feisty spirit, which no doubt contributed to her longevity. She enjoyed going dancing on Saturday night, traveled around the country by car, tending her garden and keeping a neat house. She would often feed the neighborhood cats.
Violet enjoyed a long life, good health, and admiration and love of those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Especially her surviving family: Brother, Glen Riggs of Turlock, California. In St. Helens, daughter, Doris Hald Heimuller and husband Dale; Grandchildren Henry Heimuller and wife Pam, Todd Heimuller and wife Leslie, Amanda McFeron and husband Greg, and her five great grandchildren; Jennifer and Heather Heimuller, Tyler and Bryan McFeron, and Mikela "Micki" Heimuller.
Condolences and flowers may be sent to the Columbia Funeral Home at 681 Columbia Blvd., St.Helens, Oregon. Donations can be made in memory of Violet to the Meals on Wheels Program at the St. Helens Senior Center, 375 S. 15th St., St. Helens, Oregon 97051.
