Vivian Ruth Swopes Casswell Urie
Funeral services for Vivian Ruth Swopes Casswell Urie will be held at the former Congregational Church in Scappoose, on Friday, June 13, 2008
Vivian was born in Melrose, New Mexico to Daniel and Susie Swopes. She moved to Scappoose in 1940 with her mother, Susie; sister, Eula; brother, Dolton; and sister, Patsy. Vivian graduated from Scappoose High School in 1947 and married her first love, Bob Casswell in 1948. Bob and Vivian raised their six children, Dan, Carolynn, Gayle, Beverly, Jerry, and Bert in Scappoose. Widowed in 1970, Vivian later married life long friend Gilbert Urie and welcomed stepdaughters, Vicki and Carol into her heart.
Vivian worked and volunteered her entire adult life in Scappoose, starting while still in high school writing editorials for the "Sentinel Mist," no the St. Helens Chronicle: and as a waitress at the Highway Café. She held the positions of Municipal Court Judge and was city recorder in Scappoose for 14 years, executive secretary for the Community Action Team, and finally worked many years along side Gib in the office at the P&G Thriftway.
A community activist, Vivian could be found selling sauerkraut a the local festival for her favorite cause, the creation of a community swim pool, or among other activities, organizing behind the scenes at a car show for the Scappoose Historical Society.
An abundant of love for her family continued up until this past week, as she let all of her loved ones know her heart as they visited with her. She will be remembered fondly by those who survive her including husband, Gilbert t Urie; brother, Dolton Swopes; sister, Patsy Odell Swopes; children, Dan Casswell, Vicki Kangas, Carolynn Collie, Carol Kangas, Gayle James, Beverly George, Gerald Casswell, and Albert Casswell; as well as 27 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
