Walter George Aklin's Obituary
Walter (Walt) George Aklin (80) passed away unexpectedly at his family home in Scappoose, Oregon on October 19th, 2023. Walt was born on October 16th, 1943 in Butte, Montana to George and Lillian Aklin. He grew up in Montana and also spent time in Nevada and California as a child before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He moved to Oregon upon returning from the service.
In 1966, he met the love of his life, Beverly Ann Nelson and they were married later that year. They were true soulmates and never tired of each other’s company. They recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. They raised three sons, David, Donavan, and Jason; and many fur babies throughout the years. Walt was always endeared to his fun-loving pugs, and you could often find him walking them and rewarding them with treats.
Throughout his career, Walt worked several jobs including construction to build the Fremont Bridge in Portland. For over 25 years, he was a talented millwright working with Schnitzer steel and Multnomah Plywood before spending 15 years at Boise Cascade where he retired.
Wally, as he was known to his many friends, enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and many camping trips with family during the year. He had a keen knack for woodworking and spent hours in his workshop creating beautiful pieces for his loved ones including tables, dog bowls, and amazing cribbage boards. Always a competitor, he loved a friendly game of cribbage and always looked forward to his annual horse shoe tournament where he often placed 1st. After retirement, he dedicated time to refurbishing a 1955 Studebaker to pristine condition which was his passion project for many years. He enjoyed his daily walks with Bev and the pug, their Friday wine nights, and caring for the koi in his fish pond. More than anything else, he cherished his family and especially enjoyed gatherings and holidays.
Walt is survived by his wife Beverly; his children David (Janet) Aklin, Donavan Aklin, and Jason (Julie) Aklin; his grandchildren Ashley Aklin and Joey Aklin, his great grandchildren Jacob, Haley, and Joshua Farnsworth; and his pug Abby. Walt is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Sam Aklin, and his sister Linda Lambros.
