William Destin King's Obituary
William "Bill" Destin King passed away at a Portland hospital, July 16th. He was 84.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 24th at 10:00 AM at the Warren Baptist Church. Visitation will be Friday, July 23rd from 10-5 PM at Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens.
He was born August 2, 1925 to William Edward and Mayme Anne Welter King, the 4th of 5 children. He attended St. Helens High School and joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. He returned to St. Helens and married Carolyn Jean Garver on January 15th, 1945. He worked for Pope and Talbot, Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill until the 1980's then for Stimpson Lumber Company until 1987 when he retired. He was active in his community with the St. Helens Elk Lodge and as a member of the St. Helens Yacht Club. An active member of the St. Helens Community Bible Church he was always a willing hand and could be found assisting on many a project. Bill was also a past City Councilman for Columbia City.
Bill loved life, he was an avid fisherman, Clammer and hunter. He enjoyed his time with his 7 grandsons. Going to college football games was a passion. He was a fan of the University of Washington Husky's and the Oregon Civil War games. One time his Husky bumper sticker saved him from getting a ticket in Longview as the police officer was impressed an Oregon driver was a Husky fan. Bill and his wife loved to travel and saw much of the United States fist by tenting then camper, trailer and finally a motor home. He was loved man who was known to be a great practical joker, good cook and wonderful neighbor.
Bill is survived by his three daughters; Karen Freeland, Kathy Keudell and Konnie Speirs all of Columbia City, sister; June King-Carlson of Lake Oswego, 7 grandsons; Jeff Wetherbee, John Wetherbee, H E Freeland, Herby E Freeland, H Eugene Freeland, Brandon Keudell, Joseph Froli and 6 great grandchildren: Alyssa Freeland, Alyxis Wetherbee, Harrison Freeland, Jeremey Wetherbee, Bailey Wetherbee, Dhani Freeland.
