Hans was a nut-cake and so was I. When Hans was in his 30's and I was in my 20's we went 'trick-or-treating' at the house across the street from our parents home. Hans crouched down like a little kid and I played the parent. We went up to the door and rang the doorbell. When the owner answered Hans said 'Trick-or-treat' in an old-gravelly voice, and put out his cupped hand. Sure enough--he got candy! Score one for the Knuths!
When I was first learning to drive Hans was trying to teach me all the secrets of good driving. I knew Hans was brave when I took a corner at about 50 and he just kept talking to me very calmly. (While I was freaking out!)
Hans was a frequent patron of estate sales. Some of my best memories are the times he brought over cool presents for Donnie and me. He had awesome taste, and put a lot of care into what he bought for us. One of my favorite things he gave me was a brass container for firewood. I planted fushias in it and put it on my front porch. It was so pretty.
Hans bought a house in Scappose where he lived for many years. He also lived in Saint Johns, North Portland and Hillsboro. He worked many of his working years in NW Portland, Saint Johns and briefly in Scappoose. Hans was a Social Butterfly. He was very outgoing and liked to talk to people. If you've lived in Saint Johns or Scappoose I'll bet he had a conversation with you!
To the women at the US Banks in Saint Johns and Scappoose over the years-- Hans especially enjoyed talking to you-- You were his FAVORITES! He told me he had to go to the bank EVERY Friday so he could visit with you!
Hans was one of those people that was bigger than life. I will forever love him and miss him--
His little Sis,
Margie
...or as Hans (and Jules) called me- "M.C."
