Mary Hlavinka Evert, of Scappoose, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 18. Mary was 93.
Mary was born to one of the founding Bohemian families that migrated to farm in the Scappoose area. She was born at home on Dutch Canyon Road on September 9, 1922 to Joseph Hlavinka and Frances Prokop Hlavinka. She was the second of 7 children.
She was educated in Scappoose and Portland. She left her family home to work as a housekeeper in Milwaukie, Oregon when she was 14 years old, until she completed high school.

In 1949, she married William D. Evert in St. Helens. While raising their family in Scappoose, Mary worked as a housekeeper and cleaned the church on many occasions. She also worked at the box factory, at Chase bag and drove bus for area strawberry pickers to Luttrells. She also helped with the Strawberry Socials and the Turkey dinners at church, where Kolaches were the favorite baked treat.
Mary and Bill were snowbirds for 16 years, and enjoyed traveling in their 5th wheel trailer. They also loved to socialize, garden and square dance.
She was committed to her catholic faith and devoted to the Blessed Mother. She said the rosary at least once a day, if not three times a day. She also attended daily mass at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where she was a lifetime member.
Her husband Bill passed away in 2008. In addition to Bill, she was preceded in death by her son Doug in 1997. Mary is survived by her children Bill Evert of Scappoose, and Patty Evert Rossi of Wilkeson, Washington; granddaughters Amber Bates of Scappoose, Helen Jackson of Puyallup, Washington and Jessica Evert of Scappoose; great grandchildren Jacob, Michael and Joey Bates and Stacie and Mia Jackson. She also loved her favorite grandcat Riley.
